Introduction
At Outreach Rescue, we are committed to ensuring equality and diversity are embedded across all aspects of our work, particularly within admissions, assessment, and the student experience. We aim to foster a culture of inclusivity where everyone feels valued and respected. This revised policy outlines how we monitor and evaluate our practices, and how feedback from Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) processes informs real change.
Outreach Rescue undertakes to comply with the requirements of equalities legislation in force, including the Equality Act 2010, the Disability Discrimination Act, the Race Relations Act, the Sex Discrimination Act, and the Human Rights Act. We will ensure that we do not discriminate against any student, customer, employee, or associate either directly or indirectly, on the grounds of colour, race, nationality, ethnic origin, gender, mental or physical disability, marital status or sexuality.
All Outreach Rescue tutors, employees, and Practice Educators are required to comply with the requirements set out in this policy.
Equal Opportunities and Fair Access
As a training organisation, we offer a variety of services including clinical governance consultancy and education and training opportunities. In promoting equality of opportunity, we strive to ensure that:
- This policy is widely publicised to all our customers and stakeholders.
- This policy is freely available to all customers, students, placement educators, tutors, and employees.
- Candidates have fair and equal access to assessment opportunities.
- The widest possible diversity of candidates can access the content and assessment of our programmes and services.
- The entry requirements, content, and assessment demands of our courses are appropriate to the knowledge, understanding, and skills specified and do not act as unnecessary barriers to achievement.
- Where barriers exist, they are clearly identified and expectations managed appropriately.
- All assessments are fair, unbiased, and free from inappropriate language or cultural bias.
- All syllabuses, examinations, and learning resources are reviewed for bias and clarity, using plain English.
Equality and diversity is inherent in all Outreach Rescue policies and procedures, including:
- Training and development of employees, assessors, examiners, and Practice Educators.
- Development of examinations and assessments.
- Quality assurance of examinations and assessments.
Admissions
Outreach Rescue aims to:
- Attract and retain students from a wide pool and diverse communities who have the potential to succeed.
- Ensure equality of opportunity for all applicants to gain admission to a course suited to their aspirations and professional requirements, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation.
- Ensure recruitment and application processes are fair, transparent, and free from discrimination.
We achieve this by:
- Providing clear, consistent, and accessible information about all courses to applicants, employers, and staff.
- Assessing all applications on an individual basis.
- Ensuring selection methods are reliable, appropriate, fair, and account for prior learning and experience.
- Making reasonable adjustments where required.
- Operating transparent and consistent procedures in decision-making.
Equality and Diversity in Practice-Based Learning
Equality, diversity, and inclusion must be consistently applied not only in academic settings but also in practice-based learning, which forms an integral part of the L6 Diploma in Paramedic Sciences.
Principles
- All learners must experience practice placements free from discrimination, harassment, or victimisation.
- Outreach Rescue, employer sponsors, and practice providers share responsibility for ensuring inclusive placement environments.
- Compliance with the Equality Act 2010 and related legislation is expected of all placement sites.
Learner Responsibilities
- Demonstrate inclusive and respectful behaviour towards patients, carers, staff, and colleagues.
- Respect cultural, religious, and personal differences in line with the HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics.
- Inform Outreach Rescue or their Practice Educator (PEd) of any support needs or EDI-related concerns.
Practice Educator Responsibilities
- Undertake Outreach Rescue’s Practice Educator training, which includes EDI and anti-discriminatory practice.
- Induct learners into the placement site’s local EDI policies at the start of placement.
- Apply agreed reasonable adjustments to ensure equitable participation.
- Monitor inclusivity in the placement environment and escalate concerns using the Placement Concern / Early Warning Trigger process.
Monitoring and Feedback
- EDI is explicitly reviewed at mid-point and end-point placement meetings with the Link Tutor.
- Learner reflections and survey feedback relating to EDI are monitored by Outreach Rescue’s Senior Management Team.
- Themes identified are incorporated into quarterly EDI reviews, ensuring practice-based issues inform institutional policy and improvements.
Required Reading
All learners and Practice Educators must engage with the following text to support inclusive supervision and learning:
- Clarke, V. (Ed.) (2020). Practice-Based Learning: A Handbook for Practice Educators and Facilitators. College of Paramedics.
Policy Monitoring and Evaluation
To ensure our Equality and Diversity Policy remains effective, we monitor and evaluate our practices using a structured approach. We collect demographic data on applicants and students to identify any patterns or potential disparities. Recruitment and admissions data are reviewed to ensure fair and unbiased practice, and imbalances are investigated.
Feedback mechanisms include:
- Anonymous Surveys: Regularly conducted with students and staff.
- Feedback Review: Senior Management Team evaluates EDI-related feedback quarterly.
- Action Planning: Specific, measurable actions are created to address barriers and are communicated to all stakeholders.
Commitment to Progress
Outreach Rescue affirms its commitment to an inclusive and supportive environment for all applicants, students, staff, and stakeholders. By embedding monitoring, feedback, and continuous improvement, we ensure EDI is not just a principle but a foundation for excellence across academic and practice-based learning.
